A new type metal/semiconductor triboelectric nanogenerator with adjustable output under illumination.

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a new type of energy collection device by converting mechanical energy that is ubiquitous in the environment into electricity. Which can power small electronic devices or serve as a self-powered nanosensor. TENG has great application potentials in energy harvesting and sensing in the future. In fact, it is very important and necessary to design new TENG with controllable output in meeting the demand of better practical applications. Therefore, we designed a brand new and simple metal/semiconductor TENG based on the ultrathin Au film and TiO2 layer as friction materials. Under illumination, the current polarity of TENG is reversed instantaneously with 12 and 2 times increase for negative and positive short-circuit current, respectively. The surface states play the key role in determining the magnitude and polarity of triboelectric current. By controlling the surface properties of the Au and TiO2 films, the output performance of TENG can be controlled and regulated.
