The School of Materials and Energy (SME) of Southwest University (SWU) was established in December 2013 via merger of the School of Materials Science and Engineering established in 2003 (the former Materials Science Institute  established in 2001) and the Institute for Clean Energy & Advanced Materials established in 2011. It was called Faculty of Materials and Energy until December 2018. In January  2019, it was renamed as SME to include Institute for Clean Energy & Advanced Materials, Department of Materials Science and Department of Materials Engineering.

Currently, the school has 80 faculty & staff members, including 20 professors and 29 associate professors. Over 97% of the full-time teaching faculty have doctor degrees and over 73% full-time teachers have overseas experience of studying, working, visiting or academic exchange. At present, the school has an enrolment of 669 undergraduate students, 231 master candidates, 30 PhD candidates, 4  post-doctor research fellows and 2 overseas students.

The school offers doctoral degree program in clean energy science and in nano-biomedicine, master’s degree in materials science and engineering, clean energy science, nano-biomedicine and in materials engineering. Since 2016, the materials science discipline has entered into the global top 1% of Essential Science Indicators (ESI) released by Clarivate Analytics for consecutive years. At present, SME has five research platforms: Chongqing Key Laboratory of Clean Energy, Materials & Technology, Chongqing Innovation & Entrepreneurship Base for Overseas High-level Talents in Clean Energy & Bioelectronics, Chongqing Engineering Research Center for Rapid Diagnosis of Dread Diseases, Chongqing International Science & Technology Cooperation Base and Chongqing Engineering Research Center for Micro-Nano Biomedical Materials & Devices. It has over 50 valuable instruments and equipment with total value over 90 million CNY, including X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscope (FETEM), confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM), chemical vapor deposition (CVD), atomic force microscope (AFM), Raman spectrometer and inductively-coupled plasma source mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) 

SME has established two undergraduate programs: Metallic Materials & Engineering and Materials Physics. The Materials Physics is of Chongqing characteristic, with five specialties: new energy materials, biomaterials, metallic functional materials, 3D printing and ceramic materials.

The researches in SME is focused on clean energy science ( solar cell, lithium/sodium ion battery, microbial fuel cell and photo/electro-catalysis), nano-biomedicine ( drug delivery, tumor diagnosis and treatment, bio-analysis and bio-sensing), functional ceramics (dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric materials) and metallic functional materials ( amorphous alloy, material damage and fracture as well as material surface treatment). In recent three years, the faculty members in SME have published 532 SCI papers in international journals like Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Adv. Energy Mater., Adv. Funct. Mater., Nano Energy, J. Control Release, Acta Mater., J. Eur. Ceram. Soc., etc., applied 74 Chinese invention patents, authorized 58 Chinese invention patents, gotten 60 national and provincial/ministerial research grants and 27 research subjects from industries, and transferred 14 patents to companies.
