Emerging Surface Modified Approaches to Control Biofilm-Related Infections in Dental Implants

Abstract

A significant concern emerging from current Implant Dentistry is the increasing prevalence of peri-implant infections and the lack of consensus on the most effective therapeutic technique to treat such diseases. Therefore, new strategies for peri-implant biofilm control are urged to be developed to guarantee the long-term predictability of the implant treatment. Therefore, this presentation aims to approach multifunctional coatings for dental implants using the concepts of superhydrophobicity, photocatalysis under UV and visible lights, and the antibacterial mechanisms of biocompatible metals. In addition, an approach of biofilm models considering the in vivo conditions will be discussed to better translate the bench knowledge to the clinical field.

    Advanced Functional Biomaterials

    Abstract

    Tissue engineering is a multifaceted way to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of tissue healing/regeneration by tailoring novel functional biomaterials. At present, the demand for the new generation functional materials for tissue engineering is enormous due to the high incidence of sizeable segmental tissue defects resulting from trauma, tumor resections or inflammation. On the other hand, the ability to design functional biomaterials and printing 3D constructs which mimics native tissues architecture and composition are the primary challenges for the materials scientist. In this context, our work will offer you the brief insight about the development of various functional biomaterials such as ceramic nanomedicines, nonwoven membrane from synthetic polymer/ nanohydroxyapatite (via electrospinning) and 3D stem cell printed constructs from spider silk protein bio-inks or hydrogel. More precisely, this work will give more idea about the design and development functional biomaterials including 2D constructs and 3D constructs fabrication method for the tissue engineering applications. As a whole, this proposed strategy and developed novel functional biomaterial constructs are thought to be a great asset to overcome the significant drawbacks of tissue replacements such as fabricating mechanically adequate cell-laden 3D constructs without compromising any sort of biological activities, which mimic the structure and general functional characteristics of the native tissue architecture.
